Its most remarkable monuments are the martyrion, the baptistery, and the church, all renovated in the 13th century, at the time of the atabeg king of Mosul Badr-al-din Lu'lu '. The church is older than the 12th century according to a Syriac inscription commemorating renovations in its sanctuary.
The architectural and iconographic repertoire of the 13th century in Mar-Behnam is rich and brilliant. All the doors are provided with double lintels decorated with intertwined serpents, heads of lions, the lion being the symbol of the Seljuk kings, stalactites, and crosses, and long strips of palmettes decorate the top of the walls. The inscriptions in Syriac, probably executed by a monk of Qaraqosh, blend harmoniously with the iconography.
This book contains the first French translation of Mar Behnam’s Acts, which gives an idea of the monument at this time, and includes an in-depth analysis of the architecture, iconography and epigraphy of this monastery. The content and countless photos will allow to admire this monument, heavily damaged during the occupation of the region by the Islamic State, and contribute to the discussion on the art and architecture of the Mosul region in the thirteenth as well as in the eighteenth century, at the time of renovations.
