Reading Syriac sources throws a different light on the subject compared to the picture that emerges from the Greek and Latin ones. They highlight the importance of ecclesiastical envoys, sent not only by the Roman emperors but also by the Sasanians. Double civil and ecclesiastical negotiations took place that show relationships between the Roman and Iranian churches otherwise invisible.
