The Baptism scene emphasizes the divine nature of Jesus, announced and prefigured by the prophets of the Old Testament depicted scene in the upper corners of the panel. The icon with its two sides, the Virgin Hodegitria emphasizing the human nature of Jesus, and the baptism his divine nature, says the hypostatic union of the two natures of Jesus. Some ancient texts associate the rite of baptism with rivers and other water sources, where sanctification could take place. This is why the link of the Kaftoun icon with the ritual of baptism on the day of the Epiphany is plausible, especially as the monastery is located at the edge of Nahr el-Jaouz river. The panel was held so that the image of the Virgin, to whom was dedicated the monastery, was directed forward while the baptism scene was facing the congregation. All this testifies to the liturgical function of the icon.</note></biblStruct><bibl type="formatted" subtype="bibliography" resp="https://www.zotero.org/styles/chicago-note-bibliography-17th-edition">
