However, the Bible is not perceived as a mysterious or untouchable work. Since Origen, the Church Fathers have emphasized its formal weaknesses. As an example of the so-called Antiochian exegesis, Theodoret of Cyrus underscores the fact that the Bible is also a very concrete, even fragile, object, consisting of pages and ink. Using examples from Theoderet of Cyrus’ commentaries on the Old and New Testaments, this article examines the circumstances that lead to these statements and the exegetical goals that can be discerned in them, especially the explanation of difficult words, the development of historical information about the text. According to Theodoret, the text contains evidence of its genesis and the circumstances of its transmission. Such explanations offer valuable information about the use of language in the 5th century, and point to the effort to understand the history of the origin of the Bible in its complexity. In this field, modern exegetes could see themselves as heirs of this question. Beyond a thorough study of the terms and a preference for a historical interpretation of Scripture, however, a theological interpretation can also be discerned that is entirely related to the doctrine of the Incarnation and the doctrine of the Two-Natures, as defended by Theodoret in Ephesus and Chalcedon. Furthermore, the meaning of the word βιβλίον is discussed in an excursus in a commentary on Rom. 16:3.</note></biblStruct><bibl type="formatted" subtype="bibliography" resp="https://www.zotero.org/styles/chicago-note-bibliography-17th-edition">
