The words on the chalice in the narration, inspired by Matthew, about the institution (for the remission of sins) already hint at the Judaic expiatory sacrifice. These expressions recall the rite of the day of expiation (<i>Jom Kippur</i>). Before the liturgy of believers, the West-Syriac rite presents a supplication for the forgiveness of sins. The Syro-Malabarian liturgy has a prayer pray on incense for the remission of sins. In the Syro-Antiochean tradition a sedro took the name of "expiation". In the epiclesis of James's anaphora, the remission of sins is claimed as a fruit of the Holy Ghost; then, at the end of the intercessions, there is another request for forgiveness both for the living and for the dead. The origin of this text may be found in the Judaic confession of sins in the Kippur. Even those prayers which preface the Communion rite show penitential aspects, but it would be exaggerated to define it a penitential rite. On the other hand, it is present in the East-Syriac rite. In the Syro-Antiochean rite there are evidently some penitential elements even in the formularies which accompany the Eucharistic Communion. Eastern liturgies - considered as a whole - identify the remission of sins with one of the effects of a total and deserving participation to Eucharist.</note></biblStruct><bibl type="formatted" subtype="bibliography" resp="https://www.zotero.org/styles/chicago-note-bibliography-17th-edition">
