It first considers the Hymns against the Heresies and the Prose Refutations against Mani, Marcion, and Bardaisan and provides an overview of the polemical and rhetorical devices displayed in order to condemn previous Christian movements and establish, by way of contrast, a new “orthodoxy.” The focus is on the anti-Manichaean controversy, since Manichaeism seems to have represented an ecclesiological threat to Ephrem’s own theological proposal on many levels, including the usage of poetry to convey a religious message. Next, the paper examines the evolution of the concept of heresy and the anti-Manichaean polemics in the Syriac literature, from the fifth century in the Roman and the Persian Empires, to the Abbasid epoch in Iraq. After Ephrem, treatises against Manichaeism can only be found in the Syriac translations of Greek refutations (such as the Acta Archelai and the works by Titus of Bostra and Severus of Antioch), which proved very influential, and the term “Manichaean” became a stereotyped invective against different kinds of religious opponents. However, Manichaeism proper continued to figure in lists and catalogues of heresies, two practical tools which allow to summarize the doctrine to follow and the doctrines to reject, in order to avoid religious persecution and consolidate the internal cohesion of the Syriac communities. Syriac heresiological texts are a mine for the reconstruction of the religious landscape and the interreligious interactions in the late antique and medieval Middle East and provide access to the teachings and even texts of lost religious movements.</note></biblStruct><bibl type="formatted" subtype="bibliography" resp="https://www.zotero.org/styles/chicago-note-bibliography-17th-edition">
