The prayer hall of the synagogue is the first and only one whose murals are entirely covered with figurative biblical episodes, enhanced by extra-biblical Jewish sources (26 to 32). Its program features the biblical heroes (Moses, Elijah and David) in an apologetic purpose. The Christian building located near the Jewish one also contains a unique iconographical program dedicated to the miracles of Christ. Six paintings depict Jesus and his miracles and two episodes relate the Hebrew Bible (Adam and Eve and David and Goliath).
We propose to interpret the synagogue program not only following the three linear narratives but also the panels placed one opposite the other. They then form a reasoned response in the sense of Judaism to the program developed in the baptistery. This would be the first controversy between Jews and Christians through pictures in Antiquity but also the birth of the typological exegesis in their religious images.</note></biblStruct><bibl type="formatted" subtype="bibliography" resp="https://www.zotero.org/styles/chicago-note-bibliography-17th-edition">
