The letters of the three great Syrian controversists Simeon of Bet Aršam, Jacob of Serug and Philoxenus of Mabbug highlight the importance of the miaphysite networks at play between Northern Syria and Southern Arabia as well as between Egypt, Ethiopia and Arabia. They also show the content and the vocabulary of the debates that took place in the Christian milieus of Arabia on the eve of Islam. The chapter also points to the lasting presence of Julianists (a miaphysite dissenting movement) in the Peninsula until at least the eighth century. Also named “aphtartodocetists,” the Julianists introduced distinctive Christological positions (as did the so-called tritheists or more mainstream “Nestorians” and miaphysites) that may throw light on Qurʾanic conundrums. The chapter advocates that Syriac literature of controversy constitutes a historical touchstone for discussions about possible Christian influences on the Qurʾān.</note></biblStruct><bibl type="formatted" subtype="bibliography" resp="https://www.zotero.org/styles/chicago-note-bibliography-17th-edition">
