On the one hand, the paper focuses on the doctrinal controversies between Catholicism and the Reformation; on the other, it examines the relation between confessional dogmatisms and humanistic philosophies. Through a new analysis of the data collected by Irena Backus, some additional contextual elements are investigated. Ultimately, the reception of the <i>Recognitiones </i>in Johann Wier’s work is connected to the genesis of the Faust legend.
