Its architecture and decoration are so similar to those of the cruciform martyrion that both buildings can be linked to the initial phase of construction. The site’s two major monuments were subsequently the subject of a shared enthusiasm for exterior architectural enrichment, such as porticoes, and the use of marble veneer and mosaic for interior decoration. The baptistery played an essential role at the end of the 5th and at the beginning of the 6th century, when many adult pilgrims received baptism there. Its importance faded afterwards with the rise of Christianity. At the end of a rapid transition, baptism was mainly for newborns and the sacrament was given to them in the small canopy font located in the convent chapel, universally identified as a jewel of the ornamental sculpture of the Palaeo-Christian Limestone Massif.</note></biblStruct><bibl type="formatted" subtype="bibliography" resp="https://www.zotero.org/styles/chicago-note-bibliography-17th-edition">
