Scholarly attempts at comparisons between corpora of Syriac homilies from Late Antiquity and the quranic corpus have yielded promising results without however addressing the crucial question of the definition of the homily in general and the Syriac homily more specifically. The present study wishes to attempt to resolve this shortcoming and, by way of a comparison of the content and context of passages from both the Quran and Syriac homilies, try to show that such a comparative study does indeed offer promising perspectives for our understanding of the text and context of Islam’s sacred scripture.
