The first two sections of the paper aim at giving a general overview of the text and of its manuscript witnesses. They contain some codicological and text-critical observations, offering an overview of the main features of ms. Or. 298 of the Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana of Florence, which preserves the oldest dated copy of Barhebraeus’ Metrical Grammar. The last section analyses from the linguistic point of view two particular paragraphs of the Grammar, in which Barhebraeus gives his own interpretation of a phenomenon that some modern linguists call coreferential dative. The aim of this section is to show how the study of native Syriac grammars can contribute not only to the understanding of ancient linguistic thinking, but also of features of the Syriac language usually overlooked.</note></biblStruct><bibl type="formatted" subtype="bibliography" resp="https://www.zotero.org/styles/chicago-note-bibliography-17th-edition">
