After presenting briefl the sources available for the study of the School, the paper discusses the current understanding of the School’s history, theology and organisational structure. It pays special attention to the selfawareness of this community, its contacts with the Western (Roman) world as well as its relation to the East Syriac monastic movement. The fial section is devoted to the textual tradition of the Canons.
