A Syriac Orthodox monk of the 14th century, his work is an example of intellectual activity in the Syriac Orthodox Church following the close of the Syriac Renaissance. Through an appreciation of Daniel of Mardin’s life, context, and work, a greater understanding can be obtained of the literary climate of the Syriac Orthodox Church in Turkey in the 14th century and of how Bar Hebraeus’ writings were appropriated in the century following his death.
