Starting from the 18th century, some commentators on the Book of Lamentations referred to works by St. Ephrem the Syrian, St. John Chrysostom, and St. Athanasius of Alexandria as possible sources of Narekats‘i. However, in none of those works was this apocryphal narrative used for commenting on John 5:1-15. The only evidence of such use is attested in the commentary on this Gospel by Theodore of Mopsuestia, which could not have been known to Narekats‘i. Therefore, the author assumes that another writing could have served as a source for the apocryphal story in the Book of Lamentations, namely, Chapter 13 of the Prayerbook by St. Ephrem the Syrian surviving only in Armenian version. Together with other commentaries and works by St. Ephrem the Syrian, the Prayerbook was well known in the monasteries of Armenia in the 9th-10th cc. It is then not accidental that Chapter 13 of the Prayerbook was utilized in the Book of Lamentations as a special tool for the theological interpretation of John 5:1-15.</note></biblStruct><bibl type="formatted" subtype="bibliography" resp="https://www.zotero.org/styles/chicago-note-bibliography-17th-edition">
