It studies what is currently considered as the oldest dated Garshuni (Arabic written in Syriac characters) lapidary inscription in Lebanon (1628). Beside its historical and paleographical interest, this inscription has many characteristics of the Garshuni already observed in manuscripts, which were then adopted in the epigraphic tradition in Lebanon and elsewhere. The article contributes to a better understanding of the evolution of Garshuni in its local and religious aspects, as well as the influence of Syriac and Arabic on the emancipation of dialectal languages in the Middle East.</note></biblStruct><bibl type="formatted" subtype="bibliography" resp="https://www.zotero.org/styles/chicago-note-bibliography-17th-edition">
