It goes without saying that this practice evolved, according to a more or less complex process, depending on the diversity of community practices, until it reached most of its final form in the 4th and 5th centuries. Three stages mark out this initiation: the preparatory phase, characterized by a baptismal catechesis, accompanied by a testing of the catechumen; the celebration itself which, in antiquity was linked to the feast of Easter; and the post-baptismal period, in which the baptized had to engage in the life of the church, without however ruling out the continuity of his formation. This article would like to take up this evolution of the baptized, from the first conversion to baptism, by trying to retrace the main lines of the contents of Christian instruction.
