In Christian symbolism it has become the emblem of the Christ, his virginal birth and the most perfect evocation of the kingdom of Heaven. In addition to this new symbolism there is a gnostic dimension, visible in texts written in syriac by Christian authors, undoubtly influenced by Mandaean and Manichaean beliefs which had also lifted this symbol to the highest level of their tenet of salvation.
