Attention is drawn to the importance of personal interactions and naming practices of the adversary. The chapter first tries to delineate how the names we still use for Syriac churches and denominations came into being. It then draws attention to the way names were changed, replaced, erased, and even written upside down in manuscripts in order to curse religious enemies—Satan in the first place—in a lasting practice that crept into Garshuni, Arabic and Turkic manuscripts. The chapter also aims at showing how reading accounts of church councils and religious conferences with social prosopography in mind can tell much about religious, social and political networks in the Near East.</note></biblStruct><bibl type="formatted" subtype="bibliography" resp="https://www.zotero.org/styles/chicago-note-bibliography-17th-edition">
