At present, about twenty-five sites with paintings are known. The actual state of conservation of these murals is generally fairly bad. A team of UNESCO/ICCROM has recently started with the restoration of the paintings in the Church of Mar Charbel in Ma}ad, but there is still a lot of work to be done. The best preserved murals are those in the Church of Mar Tadros in Bahdeidat, where a Deisis, twelve apostles/evangelists, Daniel, Saint Stephen, and two equestrian saints can be seen. In several other churches a similar programme is present (e.g. Mar Mitri, Qusba), while in others only vaguely recognizable traces remain. Several paintings were discovered in caves, such as that of Deir Salib in the Qadisha Valley. Here again, the intervention of a restoration team is urgently needed.
The SYNCAS project is aiming at a meeting of all specialists in the field of Lebanese and Syrian wall-paintings at a symposium to be held in Lebanon in the year 2000, as well as to provide support for the preservation of these murals for the future.</note></biblStruct><bibl type="formatted" subtype="bibliography" resp="https://www.zotero.org/styles/chicago-note-bibliography-17th-edition">
