A Treatise on the Unity and Trinity of God attributed to the Nestorian bishop Israel of Kaškar (d. 872) contains a passage clearly derived from Chapter Ten of this work. The passage is examined in its relationship with the source and in its importance for the theological views of Israel. For him, the “Theology” authored by Aristotle provides arguments that support the Christian Trinity, described in terms of a triad of principles: ‘being, life, reason’. This Trinitarian doctrine is examined in its relationship with other examples in Arabic Christian theology which forms the background of the whole of Israel’s thought. Israel’s tenets are Neoplatonic to the same extent in which the theology of his predecessors is itself influenced by Neoplatonism. What makes Israel’s Treatise on the Unity and Trinity of God worthy of special attention is the quotation of “Aristotle” as an authoritative source to account for the triadic structure of the unique God.
