According to the author, its cradle is located within the area of the Melkite Patriarches in the Middle East. From the icons of the first centuries, almost nothing has been preserved in that region. Some characteristics of art works originating from Syria-Palestine can be found in a number of icons of Mary existing in churches in Rome. The author presents briefly eleven of them, before concluding that the Syrians have been forerunners in religious painting and architecture."
