He converted Muslims for which he was beaten and made to shave his beard and head. He had a rivalry with ʿIsa ibn Shahlupa, the head of doctors of the caliph, concerning taxes imposed on Christians by Muslim authorities. He opposed the election of Catholicos Timothy I in 780.
