It is well known that the famous translator of Galenic medicine into Arabic, Ḥunayn ibn Isḥāq, also translated extensively from Greek into Syriac. Although a good deal of secondary information about these works has long been available, few if any of Ḥunayn’s Greek-to-Syriac translations have survived to the present. The extant ʿAbbāsid-era translations of the Aphorisms, two in Arabic and one in Syriac, are thus valuable resources for understanding the importance of Syriac sources and precedents both for Ḥunayn’s Arabic translation praxis and for Arabic medicine more broadly considered. Drawing upon both the classical Syriac lexicographical tradition and contemporary philological scholarship, I investigate the relationships amongst the terminologies of these translations. In doing so I add important examples to the body of evidence for substantial Syriac influence upon Ḥunayn’s Arabic medical lexicon.</note></biblStruct><bibl type="formatted" subtype="bibliography" resp="https://www.zotero.org/styles/chicago-note-bibliography-17th-edition">
