If one takes into account a lost copy attested for the library of Bobbio, the pattern shows a distribution throughout the Columbanian foundations and associated Schottenklöster – Bobbio, St Gall, Reichenau, Tegernsee, Salzburg and Luxeuil (assuming that Bern, Burgerbibliothek 611, was written at that centre). Eighth-century copies also made their way to Tuscany and a centre in France. The earliest user of the Latin version was the author of The Cosmography of Aethicus Ister who pretended to be St Jerome. A case can be made that Ps. Jerome finished his book at Bobbio before the middle of the eighth century. The essay advances a textual argument that the lost Bobbio copy (Bo) is to be identified with Bern 611 (B) or else is related to it. The argument impugns the case that the existence of B, because it is the oldest dated copy (a. 727) and written in East Francia, proves that Petrus Monachus, the author of the Latin translation, had to have written it in that area. Given the lack of evidence for the study of Greek in eighth-century Merovingian Francia, it seems more plausible to assume that the translator worked in an Italian centre and received his Greek text from a Greek source to which his own house had a connection.</note></biblStruct><bibl type="formatted" subtype="bibliography" resp="https://www.zotero.org/styles/chicago-note-bibliography-17th-edition">
